The best canals

Bruges has one famous canal view and a dozen quieter ones. Here is where to stand for each, which ones the boat passes, and when the light and the crowds work in your favour.

The canals of Bruges follow the old course of the Reie, the river that comes in through the Lake of Love and runs north through the Groenerei towards the Damme Gate. Almost every postcard of the city is taken somewhere along that line.

Some spots are crowded from mid-morning, some are empty even in August. Below are the canals and bridges worth seeking out, what you see from each, and how the 30-minute canal boat fits in: it covers the central stretch, and the quieter canals are for walking.

The quick answer

Visit Bruges calls the Groenerei probably the loveliest canal in the city, and the Rozenhoedkaai, with the Belfry behind it, is the most photographed view. Add Bonifacius Bridge by the Church of Our Lady, the Spiegelrei at Jan van Eyck Square and the Minnewater. Come early in the morning or late in the evening for empty quays; the canal boat covers most of these from the water.

What is the most beautiful canal in Bruges?

The Groenerei. Visit Bruges calls it probably the loveliest of the canals, and the boat FAQ lists it as one of the most romantic.

The name means "green canal", and it lives up to it: trees and gardens down to the water, small bridges, brick houses reflected in still water. There are benches along the bank, so it is a place to sit as much as to photograph. The canal boats pass through it, which gives you a second angle on the same houses.

It is not the most famous view. That title goes to the Rozenhoedkaai a few minutes away. But ask locals and guides where they would walk, and the Groenerei comes up first.

Where is the famous Bruges canal view?

On the Rozenhoedkaai, the Rosary Quay, where the canal bends and the Belfry rises behind the rooftops. It is the view on most postcards of the city.

The quay is named after the rosaries once sold here. It sits a short walk from the Markt, between the Huidenvettersplein and the Dijver, and one of the five boat jetties is right on it. That means boats in your picture for most of the day, which can be a plus.

It is also the busiest spot in town. For a clear shot, come before 10 a.m., when the boats start and the groups arrive, or after dark: Visit Bruges names the Rozenhoedkaai as one of the best places for night photos, with the Belfry lit above the water.

★★★★★

The pace of both the walking tour and the canal cruise was very pleasant in the small group of 13 people in total, and there was also time to take photos [...] there are plenty of subjects to choose from.

Where are the best photo spots on the Dijver and at Bonifacius Bridge?

On the Dijver, look up at the Church of Our Lady, the tallest tower in the city. A few steps on, Bonifacius Bridge frames the same tower over a tiny canal.

The Dijver is the tree-lined quay that carries on from the Rozenhoedkaai. The boats pass along it, and the Gruuthuse bridge here is the widest in the city. Hof Arents, a small garden off the Dijver, gives a view of the Church of Our Lady.

Bonifacius Bridge looks medieval, but Visit Bruges calls it one of the youngest bridges in Bruges. It crosses the canal between the Gruuthuse and the Church of Our Lady, and the boats slide underneath. It is small and gets crowded around midday, so step back onto the quay to frame it with the houses.

Why visit the Spiegelrei and Jan van Eyck Square?

This was the old port of Bruges, where merchants from all over Europe traded. The canal is wide and calm, and the boats turn here at the northern end of their route.

Visit Bruges calls Jan van Eyck Square the "Manhattan of Burgundian Bruges": the Toll House, built in 1477, the Burghers' Lodge with its slim tower and a statue of the painter still stand around it. The Spiegelrei runs away from the square, lined with merchants' houses, and it is far quieter than the canals around the Markt.

For the photo, stand on the King's Bridge (Koningsbrug), where the Spiegelrei meets the Spinolarei. From there you see the tower of the Burghers' Lodge over the water, a view Visit Bruges recommends for the evening too.

Is the Minnewater worth visiting?

Yes, and it is free. The Lake of Love sits just south of the Beguinage, and its bridge and the old Lockhouse are the photo spots Visit Bruges points to.

The name comes from an old belief that water nymphs, "minnen" in Dutch, lived here. This is where the Reie enters the city, a broad sheet of water in a park, with the Gunpowder Tower on its bank. Lovers cross the Minnewater Bridge together for luck, so the legend goes.

The canal boats do not go onto the lake; their route ends at the Beguinage. Walk there after your boat trip: on the way, the Bakkersrei next to the Beguinage is the only feeding spot for the swans in the centre, so there are nearly always some on the water and the bank.

Which canals in Bruges are quieter for photos?

The ones off the boat route, north and east of Jan van Eyck Square: the Gouden Handrei, the Potterierei and the Langerei. Few tour groups go there.

Visit Bruges describes the Gouden Handrei as a quiet, idyllic canal where the houses reflect in the water. The Potterierei has a bridge with a long canal view, and following it leads you towards the windmills on the city ramparts. The Langerei is long and open; in summer it is also where the city's swimming platform goes up, near Sasplein.

Look down, too. The canals average only about 2 m deep, and on the Kapucijnenrei next to the Concert Hall you can see the bottom on a clear day. At the Coupure, near the lock, it is about 4 m.

What can you photograph from a Bruges canal boat?

Back gardens, water gates and the facades that face the canals, from water level. St John's Hospital, the Gruuthuse bridge and the Beguinage gate look different from below.

The boat is low and open, so you shoot up at the houses and under the arches, an angle no quay gives you. Keep your hands and your phone inside the boat: skippers ask everyone to, and the bridges are close. Sit on the outside of a row if you can, and keep a strap on your camera.

Expect to share the frame. Up to 40 people ride each boat and the route is busy in summer. The swans near the Beguinage are a reliable shot, and in autumn the trees along the Dijver turn the water gold.

We had a great time on this tour, the sun even came out for a while showing the beautiful Autumn colours and buildings around the canal.

When is the best time to photograph the Bruges canals?

Early morning, before the boats start at 10 a.m., and late evening, when most visitors have gone. Autumn light and winter lights are the seasonal bonus.

Visit Bruges recommends coming back after dark, when the Markt and the Belfry are lit and the canals are nearly empty. In winter the swans are moved off the water to a covered home, but Winter Glow runs from 20 November 2026 to 31 January 2027 with lights and markets in the centre. Our Winter Glow post has the dates.
