Booking choice: The day trip from Brussels, from $38 per person. Check dates Tour details
The question is rarely whether Bruges is worth a day. It is how to get there and back without spending the day in transit. The answer depends on where you start: Brussels is a short hop, Amsterdam and Paris each cost you two and a half to three hours each way.
Below are the train times from the official sources, what each coach tour includes (and whether the canal boat is in it), how much time you really get in Bruges, and a few day trips from Bruges itself.
The quick answer
From Brussels, take the train: about 64 minutes on average to Brugge station, with about 65 direct trains a day, then a 20-minute walk to the Markt. From Amsterdam or Paris, a coach tour is simpler: $44 from Amsterdam (12 hours) or $146 from Paris. The canal boat is an option on most tours, and you can always buy it at a jetty for €15.
How do you get from Brussels to Bruges by train?
Take an intercity from Brussels-South, Central or North to the station called Brugge. It takes about an hour.
NMBS, the Belgian railways, gives an average of 64 minutes between Brussels and Bruges and about 65 direct trains a day. Visit Bruges counts three trains an hour from Brussels-South, ending in Ostend, Knokke or Blankenberge; they also stop at Brussels-Central and Brussels-North. No reservation is needed on these trains.
Get off at the station named Brugge, which is within walking distance of the old centre. Brugge Sint-Pieters is a different stop, north-east of the centre. From Brugge station it is about 20 minutes on foot to the Markt, or bus 1 or 2 (about every five minutes, €3 for 60 minutes). The ticket price depends on your age and the day you travel; buy it in the NMBS app, at a station machine or desk, or from the train attendant.
| From | Route | Journey time |
|---|---|---|
| Brussels | Direct intercity | About 64 minutes (NMBS average) |
| Ghent | Same Brussels line, direct | About half an hour |
| Amsterdam | Eurostar and intercity via Brussels-South | About 2 hours 53 minutes |
| Amsterdam | NS via Antwerp and Ghent | About 3 hours 35 minutes |
| Rotterdam | Eurostar and intercity via Antwerp | About 2 hours |
| Paris-North | Eurostar or TGV via Brussels-South | About 2 hours 30 minutes |
| London St Pancras | Eurostar via Brussels-South | About 3 hours 15 minutes |

Train or tour: which is the better Bruges day trip from Brussels?
The train if you like to set your own pace; a coach tour if you want a guide, a fixed plan and the canal boat sorted in advance.
The train is quicker and lets you stay into the evening. You plan the day yourself, and you buy the canal boat at a jetty. A coach takes a little longer, since coaches must park at the Kanaaleiland and drop groups at the Bargeplein, a 20-minute walk from the Markt. In return a guide walks you through the centre, and on the Brussels day trip you can book the canal boat as an option before you leave.

A return coach from central Brussels, a guided walk in Bruges or an audio guide, free time, and the canal boat and a beer tasting as options.
The tour leaves from Carrefour de l'Europe near Brussels-Central and lasts about 10 hours. There are two styles. The guided options include a walking tour with the guide; the "at your pace" option swaps it for an interactive audio guide and a digital map. After that you have free time for lunch and the sights.
The canal boat comes only with the boat options, and the Bruges Beer Experience with a tasting of four craft beers only with the boat and beer option. On some days the coach stops in Damme for a panoramic look. Bring headphones with a 3.5 mm jack (the guide sometimes uses radios), and a car seat for children under 2.
This trip was the perfect amount of time in Bruges. We were able to hit everything we wanted to see and didn't feel rushed.

Yes, but it is long: just under 3 hours each way by train, or a 12-hour coach day.
By train, the fastest route per Visit Bruges is the Eurostar to Brussels-South and an intercity on to Bruges, about 2 hours 53 minutes. The Eurostar needs a reserved seat. The cheaper NS route via Antwerp and Ghent takes about 3 hours 35 minutes. Either way, that is close to six hours of travel for one day.
The Amsterdam day trip runs the same format as the Brussels one: a coach from De Ruijterkade 153 behind Amsterdam Centraal, a guided walk or an audio guide, free time, and the boat and beer as options. It takes about 12 hours, rated 4.6 from 2,113 reviews. Guests like it and say the same thing about time:
I would have liked to have had more time to enjoy the city, but that's understandable given the distance.

Amsterdam to Bruges and back in one day by coach, with the canal boat and a beer tasting as options.
Explore the day trip from Amsterdam Tour detailsCan you do a Bruges day trip from Paris?
Yes. The train via Brussels-South takes about 2 hours 30 minutes; the coach tour gives you about four hours in town.
Eurostar or TGV to Brussels-South, then the intercity to Bruges, is the quick way, per Visit Bruges. The Paris day trip goes by coach from the Pullman Paris Centre Bercy (no hotel pickup) and back the same day, from $146. The walking tour and the canal cruise come only with the guided option, and the cruise runs from April to October. Bring a passport or ID card, and leave large bags behind.
We had about 4 hours to explore the city, which is fine, but if you like to explore and stop to eat at a restaurant in the area, the time goes by very quickly.

Paris to Bruges and back in a day, with the canal cruise in season on the guided option.
Check dates for the day trip from ParisHow much time do you get in Bruges on a day trip?
By train, as much as you want. On coach tours from Brussels, most of a day in town; from Paris, about four hours.
Four to six hours in Bruges is enough for the essentials: the Markt, the Burg, a canal boat, the Rozenhoedkaai and the Beguinage. Our one-day itinerary has a timed route. With less time, drop the Belfry climb (the queue and 366 steps eat an hour) and keep the boat, which shows you the most canals in the least time.
A bike stretches a short visit further. The retro bike tour covers the highlights, the windmills and the quieter streets in two and a half hours, rain or shine, with ponchos handed out.

Retro bikes, helmet and poncho, a local guide and a drink at the end, rated 4.9 from 560 reviews.
Explore the retro bike tour Tour detailsCan you add the canal boat on a day trip?
Yes. Book a tour with the boat option, or buy a ticket at any of the five jetties for €15.
Individuals cannot book the boat online. Tickets are sold only at the jetties, paid by Payconiq or cash, and the queue at busy times can be long. Tours are the way to have it booked: the boat, chocolate and walking tour includes it, and the Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris (April to October), small-group and walking tours offer it as an option. The Bruges and Ghent tour and the Zeebrugge shuttle do not include it.
Practical points for day trippers: boats sail daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from 15 March to October (last trip half an hour before closing), and by rotation from November to 14 March. There is no room for luggage on board, so use the lockers at Brugge station or the Historium on the Markt. The boats and jetties are not wheelchair accessible; Stael at Katelijnestraat 4 has the fewest steps.
The canal boat with its captain is already in the price of this small-group walk.

Ghent is half an hour by train, Ostend and the coast about 15 minutes, and Damme and Lissewege are close by bike or bus.
If you are based in Bruges, the train runs to Ghent in about half an hour and to Ostend in about 15 minutes, per Visit Bruges. By bike, the canal towpath runs north-east to Damme, the old port town. Visit Bruges also points to the village of Lissewege and the broadest beach on the Belgian coast at Zeebrugge.
Cruise passengers do it the other way round: the ship docks at Zeebrugge and the cruise shuttle runs into Bruges every 30 minutes in the morning, to the Bargeplein, and back in the afternoon. The canal boat is not part of it, so buy a ticket at a jetty in town. Brussels itself is the other big day out, about an hour away.
